Rathbone on DVD?

I began watching my father's old Sherlock Holmes movies when I was 12, and since then, black and white has never bothered me. I have kept those old tapes of his for years now, but recently my VCR ate one. Of course, both machine and tape were broken simultaneously, and I threw a fit. By this time, the old Rathbone films served more to lull me to sleep at night than anything else, and I hate to admit the time I had falling asleep without hearing his steady voice. I talked about it to anyone who'd listen.

Well, apparently I had greatly over-estimated the difficulty one would have in obtaining replacements of the three films recorded on the tape, because when my older brother visited a few days later, he presented me with the movies-in a set of DVDs. As I took them from him with a "thank you," I was trying not to get my hopes up. Surely he must have gotten a more modern Sherlock Holmes, and it wouldn't do at all. I mean, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce on DVD? Impossible.

But I looked them over, and sure enough, they were just the movies I required to once again render my collection complete. I was grateful to my brother, but now I thought about having to replace my destroyed VCR with a DVD player. For someone my age (24), I am not a big fan of technological progress. Especially when you consider what an awful waste of money it is for me to get classics in the newest form and play them on a more expensive, high-definition system whose wonderful capacities are rendered completely useless by the sheer fact that they are 60 yr. old, low-resolution, black-and-white films. Furthermore, the only time I put on any movie upstairs, in my bedroom, is to fall asleep to it, as I mentioned earlier. When I am actually going to watch a movie (other black-and-whites, or more modern ones), I will do so downstairs, where we have a combination VCR/DVD player. That one makes sense. But-in my room?

Now, I know that people rave about the extra features on DVDs, too, but again, these are 60 yr. old movies. Most likely, everyone involved in any aspect of the production is dead. It's not like I'm going to get a director's commentary, and as far as I know, they didn't bury some archive outtake reel, so you can't expect any deleted scenes or alternate endings.

Nonetheless, I'm glad to have all of my Rathbones again, and in fact, looking at the DVDs makes me wonder if he will make the transition to the next new mode of movie-playing. Somehow I think he will.
